A Brief History
The beautiful
and elegant home that is now Inn Britannia was built by a
“Cape Horner Sea Captain”, William Butman, in 1830.
Because
so many of our guests are fascinated by the maritime history
of the home and the area, we have created a journal about
the “Bootman” family that originated in Surrey, England,
immigrated to Salem, Massachusetts and eventually settled in
Searsport, Maine at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Our
journal features a multi-generational family tree that
covers nearly 400 years. We have included a collection of
photos of the family grave markers and bench at Gordon
Cemetery, about a mile down the road, where many of the
family are buried. We have photos and rubbings from the
Gloucester, Massachusetts Monument to Those Men Lost at Sea
– two members of the Butman family are immortalized on this
famous memorial. We even have a chipped bowl brought back
from China during the heyday of the China trade and given to
us by a former owner.
When you visit Inn Britannia you can feel the history in the
old house, you can capture glimpses of history at Gordon
cemetery and then you can visit the Penobscot Maritime
Museum and learn about how these families were such an
important part of Searsport’s history. |
